“Our fellow men deserve to never be abandoned, to wander alone in poverty and darkness. The practice of charity will bind all men in one great brotherhood.”
~ CONRAD N. HILTON
Last Will & Testament
Conrad never lost his sense of responsibility for the less fortunate, and he invested the same qualities of his business acumen- optimism, innovation and understanding- into his philanthropy.
Conrad established the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation as a philanthropic trust in 1944. The foundation funds organizations working to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people throughout the world.
When he passed away in 1979, Conrad Hilton left nearly his entire estate to the Foundation with guidance “to relieve the suffering [of] the distressed and the destitute” around the world, without regard to race, religion, or country. In 2007, the Conrad N. Foundation became a private family foundation.
The Foundation has six strategic initiatives:
1. Providing safe water
2. Ending chronic homelessness
3. Preventing substance use
4. Helping children affected by HIV and AIDS
5. Supporting transition-age youth in foster care
6. Extending Conrad Hilton’s support for the work of Catholic Sisters
Following in his father’s footsteps, Barron Hilton has pledged to leave the majority of his estate to the Foundation.
“…Following my father’s example, I am leaving 99 percent of my wealth to the humanitarian work of the same Foundation. Our combined endowment should exceed $5 billion, making the Hilton Foundation one of the dozen largest private foundations in the U.S.”
Steven M. Hilton, Barron’s son joined the Foundation in 1983, was named president in 1998, CEO in 2005 and chairman in 2012. Other Hilton family members serve on the Foundation board.
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation has awarded more than $1 billion in grants, giving in excess of $100 million every year. The Foundation identifies critical societal needs, and then proactively initiates major, long-term projects with select partner organizations for implementation.
