When Conrad Hilton was down on his luck during the darkest days of the Great Depression, it was a bellman, Eddie Fowler, who came to the rescue. Conrad wrote about the incident: “Only a few weeks before, when I’d been out of carfare and everything seemed unalterably black, a young bellman, Eddie Fowler, walked resolutely up to me in the lobby and thrust something in my hand. ‘Just eating money, Mr. Hilton,’ he blurted out and fled, leaving me with $300.” That money funded an investor trip that ultimately saved the company.
